All the new people means all new germs. The result: A town full of crippled winter-overs. Most got the crud and were laid up for two days. A viscous ooze draining from your head. Sandpaper swallows. An unpleasant dizzying disorientation. All of these and more are the typical symptoms of the crud. On the upside it did mean that for those of us who have had two days off less than once a month for the last year, we actually got a three day weekend for Labor Day. It just meant laboring to breathe.
This morning was still. A dust of snow fell most of the morning. Visibility was low but the cloud cover and blanket of powder kept the town warm enough to walk around with just a sweatshirt. Summer is coming.
Our safety department here saw something different in the gentle snow. A letter was sent out to remind us:
"...to be careful as conditions will get slippery and we don't want to see anyone get hurt from falls. We currently have a supply of YAKTRAX and STABILICERS available for your use at Central Supply. The Stabilicers are required wear for the ice runway no exceptions. The YAKTRAX are designed for use on the snow please don't walk on the rocks as it will destroy the devises. You will be required to return the devises at the end of the season the same as any equipment you are given. Please take advantage of this opportunity and protect yourself because we have a good supply of each type.
To be straight forward with everyone an injury that could have been averted due to a failure to use these devises will be frounded upon or worse so lets not let that happen."
The crampon type "devices" do a good job biting into the ice. So good that they are banned from being worn on aircraft due to possible damage. Should be interesting to see if the folk working the runway will listen to the Air Force or risk being "frounded upon or worse" by our safety department.
If I haven't reccomended it to you personally, I would like to suggest you visit "www.bigdeadplace.com" to get an idea of what terra incognita is becoming. We are still insignificant in this landscape but as always we think we are so big.
